Pilates
Pilates is a mind-body exercise developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer, Joseph Pilates.
Pilates focuses on balance, posture, strength and flexibility. The practice may help someone to recover from an existing injury or manage a chronic musculoskeletal issue.
The emphasis on mindfulness and body awareness can also lead to better focus and concentration in everyday life. It may also build your emotional resilience by enhancing your ability to respond to and cope with stress, reduce anxiety and depression with deep, controlled breathing techniques, promote relaxation and the release of endorphins, and boost self-esteem. Strength training exercises are also linked to improved brain function, memory, and cognitive ability.
Training
Although there are no mandatory qualifications required for Pilates instructors, the accepted UK industry standard for teaching Pilates to others is a Level 3 foundation level qualification. On average, it is expected that teachers will spend 6 - 12 months completing their initial training, adding 1 - 2 years of continued professional development and practice to enhance their qualifications and experience.
Training in Pilates may require some research to find the best route for you. Mat-based programmes, or more specialist programmes like Reformer Pilates, are certified by Ofqual with regulated awarding organisations but there are also many non-regulated training providers that deliver high quality courses and programmes for the Pilates Method.
Organisations like the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and the Society for the Pilates Method (SPM) provide a wealth of resources and information in qualifications and training.
Regulation
There are currently no statutory regulation requirements for Pilates instructors and teachers to practise in the UK.
However, in order to register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) or the General Regulatory Council for Complementary Therapists (GRCCT), Pilates instructors are required to hold an approved qualification in Pilates, as well as First Aid training.
